Anthony Joshua has paved the way for the biggest bout in the history of British boxing as he accepted Tyson Fury’s offer for ‘Battle of Britain’ showdown worth £70 million.
Everything started when Joshua got an unexpected call from Fury, whose next exciting clash is with Oleksandr Usyk next year. So he certainly wasn’t going to just sit and wait around for that long.
Initially, they were trying to schedule the fight in November but Joshua can only return to the ring by December, following last month’s loss to Usyk. Joshua, though, has been offered a handsome 40 per cent split for this fight.
Fury has also asked for a rematch clause and Joshua’s team are happy to include that as long as they are staying true to the split offered.
Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, has already confirmed that they are willing to take the deal.
“We just went back this morning and said, I spoke to AJ about that offer, we think, I think particularly he deserves more than 40 per cent,” Hearn told iFL TV.
“But, he’s happy. And I don’t make the decisions, he does. So I went back this morning and said, ‘We accept 60/40’,” he added.
Interestingly, the split will be reversed in the rematch if Joshua wins the original one. According to Hearn, that will be quite fair as Fury will be fighting the Champion in that case and the larger share of the deal should always go to the Champion.
Before sealing the deal with Joshua, Fury wanted to fight with Usyk, who has defeated Joshua twice in the last 11 months. If Usyk was available, it would have been the first four-belt undisputed title decider in the heavyweight division.
But Usyk has ruled himself unavailable until nect year after he returned to his war-torn home and family in Ukraine for the first time. So Fury turned his attention towards Joshua as he wanted to return by the end of this year.
