Chelsea has a buy-back clause on Tammy Abraham’s contract at AS Roma
Chelsea will be regretting their decision to let Tammy Abraham join AS Roma. Chelsea will be regretting their decision to let Tammy Abraham join AS Roma. The England international has already adapted to life in Italy and has been very impressed with his performances in Serie A. However, it is now believed that Chelsea has €80 million due to a buy-back clause in his contract and can ensure his return to Stamford Bridge in 2023.
The Blues sold Tammy to Italian giants AS Roma last year before making the expensive purchase of Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan. Lukaku had previously led Inter to the Scudetto but his second spell at Chelsea didn’t take off either. After plenty of controversies and a poor string of performances, the Blues eventually loaned him back to Inter this summer.
Former manager Thomas Tuchel wanted a striker desperately after Chelsea also got rid of the misfiring Timo Werner who is now back with RB Leipzig. As a result, they signed former Arsenal captain Pierre Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona.
This raised the question of why Chelsea was foolish enough to sell Tammy in the first place. The 24-year-old has found a new lease of life in Italy and has already become a fan favorite in Rome. He has returned to England manager Gareth Southgate’s plans and may make it to the final World Cup squad in Qatar.
In his latest CaughtOffside column, reliable football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that Chelsea has the option of bringing Tammy back to the Premier League in 2023. There’s an €80 million buy-back clause in his contract and if both the player and the club agree, a return might be on the cards soon.
“Yes, it’s true that Chelsea has €80m buy-back clause for Tammy Abraham next summer but again, Tammy is happy at Roma right now and there are no talks or negotiations with any clubs,” Romano explained.
“It’s really important to mention that he’s happy there with Jose Mourinho as a manager now – the Portuguese have given him a chance to shine and it’s been an important step for him in his career, so we will see in the next months or years about a Premier League return,” he added.
