Chelsea had made the news over the last couple of windows for the way they spent their money on players. After Todd Boehly took over as the new owner of the club, the London-based club have splurged money extensively on bringing home some exciting young talents for a huge amount of money, while also tying all of them on long-term contracts. 

The regular question on everyone’s mind was whether or not Chelsea are in a position to make all these signings within the parameters of the Financial Fair Play (FFP). While a lot of their deals have been amoritised, they still have suffered massive losses in the financial year, as high as £121m, which could result in the club taking drastic actions next season. 

The club have been actively trying to defend their spendings by bringing in various factors into picture for their recorded losses. They have also mentioned the sanctions laid by the UK government on Roman Abramovich during his departure as a major reason for recording such losses. Now, Chelsea could be lining up a mass clear out of players over the next few weeks. 

“‘During this period, the club was restricted in a number of areas including, but not limited to, its ability to sell matchday and season tickets, sell merchandise, accept event bookings, as well as sign contracts with players and commercial sponsorship partners, which collectively resulted in extraordinary expenses and loss of revenue,” Chelsea wrote in a statement.

The Times says Conor Gallagher, Mason Mount and others are likely on the chopping block as Chelsea try to meet Financial Fair Play regulations following a loss of £121 million ($149m) in the club’s annual accounts for 2021-22. This term alone, the Blues have spent about £600 million on transfers since the start of last summer, not to mention the record fee they paid to hire Graham Potter from Brighton.
