David De Gea says Manchester United have rediscovered their winning mentality after Carabao Cup win
Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea declared that the winning mentality is back at the club following their 2-0 triumph over Newcastle United in the final of the Carabao Cup at the Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
United won their first piece of silverware under Erik Ten Hag and it also ended their six-year drought for a trophy.
The last time that United had won a trophy was under Jose Mourinho when they lifted the Europa League in 2017, beating Ajax Amsterdam in the final. Given that United were looking to get into the top four of the Premier League at the beginning of the season and the possibility of winning trophies was only distant, it just goes to show the incredible work that Erik Ten Hag has done since taking over the side this summer.
He has proven his pedigree as a dependable manager and has completely transformed the mentality of the club. Ten Hag has also had a very positive influence on the dressing room which was previously prone to complacency and toxicity.
Following the win over Newcastle United, goalkeeper David De Gea heaped plenty of praise on the former Ajax manager.
“It’s difficult to describe and I’m emotional because it’s been so long without a trophy,” De Gea, who kept a club record 181st clean sheet on Sunday to surpass Peter Schmeichel, said.
“The start for a new era. The team is ready for everything. We showed today we can win trophies. So let’s enjoy the moment but go again. I feel the mentality of the team is a winning one.
“We are winning games and people are having an impact from the bench too. Let’s keep the momentum going.”
De Gea was part of the Manchester United side that won their last Premier League title under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2012-13. Moreover, he was also in goal when they won the Europa League under Mourinho.
United supporters are hoping that the Carabao Cup is only the beginning of something great. Technically, the Red Devils are still in the hunt for the quadruple as they remain alive in the Europa League and West Ham. They are also third in the Premier League table behind title challengers Arsenal and Manchester City. For more Football news and betting odds visit Nextbet.
