Jurgen Klopp admits that he is still the manager of Liverpool because of his past achievements with the club
According to Nextbet Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp openly admitted at a press conference that he is still the boss of the team because of the past and not on the basis of his team’s form and performances this season. Scrutiny continues to mount on the German manager as Liverpool struggle in the league this season.
They have been title contenders for the most of the last five years, but currently look like a shadow of their former selves. The Merseyside giants have also been knocked out of the Champions League after suffering a humbling 6-2 loss across both legs at the hands of Real Madrid.
Mangerial changes have been the common theme in the Premier League this season. Both Brendan Rodgers and Graham Potter got the sack on Sunday, meaning that the league has seen 12 managerial dismissals this season.
Liverpool’s current situation doesn’t bode well for Klopp either as they are eighth in the league and in danger of their worst finish under Klopp. They will also be travelling to London to take on Chelsea on Tuesday.
Ahead of the game, Klopp has addressed concerns regarding his position being in danger but he believes that his hotseat is yet to come under firm scrutiny.
“If it was my first season it would be slightly different,” said the German. “I’m aware of the fact that I’m sitting here because of the past, not because of what we did this season.”
It also makes sense given that Klopp has helped rebuild Liverpool into a footballing powerhouse. He is currently the longest serving manager in the Premier League, having spent seven and a half years at the club. During that period, he has led Liverpool to the Premier League title and has also won the Champions League once while finishing runners-up in both competitions on multiple occasions.
The Reds have lost their past three games in all competitions and are eighth in the league, the position they finished in 2015-16 – the season in which Klopp took over from previous manager Rodgers.
“We have smart owners, they know about the situation,” he added.
“There is no need [for me] to be afraid, I am here to deliver, I’m not here as a talisman or for murals on house walls.
“I know I’m still here because of what happened in the last few years.”
