Leclerc Ready to Push for New Ferrari F1 Deal Despite Options
Charles Leclerc has stated that he is prepared to “push” for a prolonged Formula 1 tenure with Ferrari, even as other possibilities emerge on the grid. His existing contract is set to expire at the culmination of the 2024 season, and neither Leclerc nor Ferrari have rushed to solidify an extension thus far.
This delay, coupled with a challenging season at Ferrari that failed to yield desired outcomes, has ignited speculation about rival teams vying for Leclerc’s services. Prominent teams like Mercedes, Aston Martin, and Red Bull are considered potential options due to potential openings by 2025. Despite considering other opportunities, Leclerc has made it clear that his priority is to realize his dream of securing the F1 championship with Ferrari. Even the smallest chance of achieving this aspiration would suffice to ensure his continued commitment to the team.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Motorsport.com, Leclerc acknowledged that drivers naturally explore alternative options when they arise. Nevertheless, this does not alter his dedication to his current team.
He remarked, “Of course, I think every driver has considered their different options, once they get the [possibility]. But I have a huge love of Ferrari. And my first target and my first dream is to become a world champion with Ferrari, more than anything else. So, if there’s a slight opportunity for it to happen, I will have no doubt about pushing to stay here at least.”
Leclerc recognizes the challenges that Ferrari has faced this year but remains optimistic about the team’s potential for improvement. He stated, “It is clear, I think for everybody within the team, that we are not happy with the situation we are in today, in that we want to win. But I love Ferrari. It feels like home to me. And I cannot say much more because there has been no discussion whatsoever apart from a few jokes here and there.”
Downplaying concerns about the delayed contract negotiations, Leclerc understands that Ferrari’s focus is currently on enhancing their competitive edge. He remarked, “I just think it is not probably the priority at the moment: not for me, but neither for the team. We are just focusing on what’s really important now. It is to be as competitive as quickly as possible again. And then we’ll see. But again, I love Ferrari and it feels like home.”
Ferrari had aimed to build on their race-winning success in 2022 to contend for the championship this year. However, they have found themselves at a disadvantage with rival Red Bull’s dominant RB19 car securing victories in all grand prix events so far.
