Liverpool set to pick up another young talent from Southampton
Liverpool over the years have picked up many players from Southampton. From the times of Adam Lallana to a British record signing of Virgil van Dijk back in the day, they have benefitted quite a lot from Southampton and the running joke in the footballing circuit is always that Southampton is their unofficial academy.
There might be a new addition to the list of players made their way from St. Mary’s to the Anfield. The Merseyside Reds are reportedly on the verge of signing Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia and are ahead of Manchester City to sign him as it stands, with Pep Guardiola yet to decide if he wants the Belgian back. Lavia has been one of the most impressive young midfielders in the Premier League. After joining Manchester City from Andrelecht as an academy prospect, he made his move to Southampton to make his presence felt and the 19-year-old has caught the attention of multiple European clubs with his technical ability.
According to journalist Sasha Tavolieri via The Redmen TV, the Anfield side are in pole position to land the teenage talent, with Lavia expected to leave Southampton this summer after their relegation to the Championship. Only signing last year, Lavia has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most exciting talents, and Liverpool could now look to make a move for the former City wonderkid, who could cost as much as £40m according to reports.
With Liverpool keen to sign as many as three central midfielders this summer, Lavia could be an outstanding addition to the squad given his age and Premier League experience, and the Reds are now seemingly winning the race for the Belgian youngster.
Tavolieri said on Liverpool;s interest in Lavia; “As it stands, Liverpool are the closest club [to signing Lavia]. At the moment there’s no real sign from Guardiola that he wants him back. It looks like Manchester City are waiting to see what happens with Gundogan before they decide what they want to do with Lavia”
Liverpool have let go of multiple midfielders over the past few years and are currently on the verge of getting themselves ahead to purchase quite a few midfielders. There are many top talents being linked to Anfield right now and it’ll be interesting to see where the time takes them. Get all the latest updates from the Premier League only on Nextbet Sports.
