Mac McLung expresses desire to play in NBA
Virginia’s Mac McClung made headlines in the world of NBA courtesy of his All-Star weekend in Utah where he put on an absolute show in the dunk contest. The youngster made an instant impression with his consistency and became a household name in a short span of time. Although he was already popular with his YouTube dunk mixtages, considering he has been in the G League all season long, it was a bit of a surprise to many.
His impressive work soon got him a little recognition from the Philadelphia 76ers. They signed McClung on a two-way deal shortly before the All-Star break meaning they can call him up to the team whenever they feel like it. This is a golden opportunity for young player to eventually prove himself at the NBA level.
Born in Gate City, Virginia, the 24-year-old has represented Georgetown Hoyas and the Texas Tech Red Raiders at the college level and made a mark that earned him a place in the G League for the Delaware Blue Coats.
“I wanna be in the NBA,” McClung said. “I wanna make an impact. I can’t have nights like tonight, but waiting my turn and I can control what I can control and that’s about it.”
When he was asked if there is anything he can improve on in order to get to the NBA, McClung didn’t give out anything specific and kept the media guessing. “There’s definitely constant improvement on both sides of the ball. I think it’s easy to say ‘Oh if I get better at this, I’ll get a chance’, but a lot of it is just waiting your turn. I really haven’t had a turn yet so when I have that turn, I believe I’ll make the most of it,” he added.
So far, the youngster has already made short appearances in the NBA for Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers in the 2021-22 edition. While the dream is not far away from becoming a reality, there is plenty at stake for the basketballer and multiple other things to improve on the field before he could really take center-stage on a regular basis.
