With just one victory in the ONE Atomweight division, Tiffany Teo is now setting her sights on reigning champion Angela Lee and believes that she deserves a shot at the championship.
Teo made a remarkable debut to kickstart her career in the atomweight division after spending several years toward the top of the women’s strawweight division. Known as ‘No Chill’, Teo took on Indian wrestler turned MMA fighter Ritu Phogat from the famous Phogat wrestling family in her first foray at the lighter weight division and went on to secure an impressive triumph.
Phogat was returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines following an unfortunate injury. She was looking to get back to winning ways after falling short in her ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix final against No.1-ranked contender Stamp Fairtex.
However, she was unable to keep up with Teo and the fight did not go the way she would’ve expected. Teo was a much bigger and stronger opponent compared to Phogat and she went on to dominate the entire fight. She submitted the ‘Indian Tigress’ in the very first round of their ONE 161 showdown.
Following the impressive victory, Teo made it clear that it has only further motivated her ambitions and she now has her sights on the reigning champion Angela Lee. Despite being just one fight into her atomweight career, ‘No Chill’ explained why she believes she should deserve an opportunity to face Lee for the championship.
“I beat the best BJJ player [Michelle Nicolini], best judoka [Ayaka Miura], best wrestler [Phogat], and best striker [Meng Bo] in the women’s MMA division. Angela is 11-3, I am 11-2. Angela lost to Michelle and dodged all of us. She is 0-3 at strawweight over the past three years and contended for the strawweight title twice. I dominated in my atomweight debut. So I don’t see why I don’t deserve a shot at the atomweight title,” she told ONE Championship.
She also believes that Lee will not be able to stand her ground if the two ever come face to face inside the cage. Lee is likely to employ her grappling-heavy game against Teo, similar to the tactic she had utilized against world champion Xiong Jing Nan.
