After a 2-0 loss to West Ham United in London, Bruno Lage was sacked as the head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday. The Portuguese manager, who took up duties at the beginning of last season, was informed about the decision by the club hierarchy on Sunday after an unsuccessful trip to London on Saturday.
Wolves currently find themselves in the relegation battle, having spent 100 million pounds on transfers. Lage was expected to transform the fortunes of the club this edition after all the backing, but after a series of poor results, his 15-month tenure came to an end.
Bruno Lage had a stunning start to Premier League life, with the club eyeing European spots after 31 games. They stood seventh in the league table and were just five points off the Champions League positions. However, in the last 15 games as manager, Lage’s team won only one game, which eventually led to the side sacking him.
“Bruno is an excellent coach, a hardworking and dedicated manager, and a warm, wise and honest man. I honestly have no doubts about Bruno’s ability, and I’m sure he will succeed elsewhere, however, the team’s form and performances over the last few months mean that we have no choice but to act,” Wolves chairman Jeff Shi said in a statement.
Besides a hard-fought 1-0 win against Southampton, Wolves have picked up three other draws which keep them 18th in the league. They also registered a victory in the EFL Cup second-round game against Preston North End.
As it stands, the English club is looking at a couple of big names to replace the Portuguese. Thomas Tuchel, who was surprisingly sacked by Chelsea this season, is being contacted by the club to take over the reigns at the Molineux. However, that could be a tough proposition as Wolves may not be able to match his monetary expectations.
Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim and former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino are also closely monitored for this role. There is an outside chance for Sevilla boss Julien Lopetegui to be named their boss as well, with his run in La Liga on the verge of coming to an end.
