Wu Yibing becomes the first Chinese player to qualify for a tour final after defeating Taylor Fritz in Dallas
Wu Yibing managed to pull off a wonderful upset by defeating top-seed Taylor Fritz 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-4 at the Dallas Open on Saturday. By doing so, he not only pulled off the shock of the tournament but also made history by becoming the first Chinese player to reach the final of an ATP tour in the Open Era.
The 23-year-old has been extremely consistent and has continually played wonderful tennis throughout the tournament. The victory over Fritz was preceded by massive wins over third-seeded Denis Shapovalov and eighth-seeded Adrian Mannarino. When he qualified for the semi-final, he had already become only the second Chinese man to reach a tour-level semi-final in the Open Era, joining Pan Bing who made the last four in Seoul in 1995.
When asked about it in the post-match interview following his win over Fritz, he mentioned that it wasn’t something that was on his mind when battling in the semi-final. Moreover, he also accepted that he wasn’t even thinking ahead to a victory that lined up a title clash with fifth-seeded American John Isner.
“When I played today I wasn’t thinking about any score or winning. I just tried to perform my best,” he said in his on-court interview after closing out the match with two of his 34 winners.
The first set of the semi-final between Fritz and Yibing lasted 58 minutes but it was the top seed who came out in front. With his back to the wall, Yibing put his foot on the accelerator and took the game to his opponent.
He had to fight off five break points in the fourth game, and was down 0-30 in the 10th game. If you are looking for more information about Tennis news go to Nextbet.
The Chinese sensation then managed to hold the serve, break down Fritz’s game and held his nerves to clinch the set. He then made a break in the fifth game of the third set stand up for his first career win over a top-10 player.
He is currently ranked a career-high 97th in the World ATP rankings but is determined to become the highest ranked Chinese player in history. That record currently belongs to Zhang Zhizhen who holds the 91st position.
